Farmer's Corner

ICAR-CIWA is carrying out basic, strategic and applied research on various gender related issues in agriculture and allied sectors with thematic approach in creating a repository of gender disaggregated data and documentation; technology testing and refinement; drudgery assessment and reduction; gender sensitive extension approach; capacity building of scientists and functionaries; efficient resource management; and gender mainstreaming.

 

List of gender friendly technologies developed at ICAR-CIWA:

Six ‘F’ model for gender mainstreaming in horticultural crops

  • Helps in generating ‘6Fs’ of sustainability namely food, fodder, fuel, feed, fibre and finance
  • Mango based, guava based, minor fruit based, coconut based, cashew based and horti-silvi pastoral based models intercropped with fruits and vegetables

Hand operated maize dehusker-cum-sheller

  • Gender-friendly on-farm model capable of dehusking and shelling maize cobs
  • Provides employment to three persons
  • Grain obtained from the equipment can be used as seed for sowing
  • Can also be operated with single-phase 370 W (0.5 hp) or 740 W (1hp) electric motor

Finger guard

  • For plucking of flowers
  • Increases work efficiency and reduces palm and finger injury
  • Cost INR 150/-

Weaning Mix

  • Prepared from sweet potato (Gourie variety, rich in vitamin A), green leaves (amaranths) and potato
  • Roasted flake powder + roasted wheat powder + pulses (green gram dal + Bengal gram dal) + sesame seeds powder are used as a base for weaning mix
  • 100g of weaning mix provides 456 kcal energy, 10.86% of protein and 84.54mg of Beta carotene

Water bag

  • Used for carrying water in difficult terrains
  • Light weight and convenient to carry
  • About 151 of water can be carried at a time
  • Made from locally available material such as plastic jerry can and synthetic leather
  • Cost INR 230/-

Protective clothing

  • For male and female pesticide applicators
  • Reduces the health hazards caused by chemical pesticides

Gender sensitive extension model

  • Enhanced access to extension services
  • Inculcates the habit of record keeping
  • Identification of farm related problems and seeking solutions from scientists
  • Improvement in establishing linkages with development agencies to bring progress to the villages
