Global Conference on 'Innovations to Impact: A Gender-Transformative Approach for Sustainable Agri-Food Systems' Inaugurated by Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan Ji, Hon'ble Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India at ICAR-CIWA, Bhubaneswar

The Global Conference on ‘Innovations to Impact: Gender Transformative Approach for Sustainable Agri-food Systems’ was jointly organized ICAR-Central Institute for Women in Agriculture, Bhubaneswar and Research Association for Gender in Agriculture (RAGA), Bhubaneswar at ICAR-CIWA with support from National Dairy Development Board, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, UN Women, World Food Programme during 08 to 10 March 2025. The conference was inaugurated on 08 March 2025 by Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan Ji, Hon’ble Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India as Chief Guest. The Hon’ble Minister congratulates all the participants in the occasion of International Women Day and highlighted that women are the backbone of agriculture and are contributing in every domain in agriculture and allied sectors. He emphasized on natural farming initiatives, gender friendly agricultural technologies, digital literacy and scientific training and capacity building programs which can help in bringing gender equality. The Hon’ble Minister also highlighted different women centric schemes like Krishi Shakhi, Drone Shakhi, Pashu Sakhi etc. During the event, the ‘Sashakti’ Museum, dedicated to Women in Agriculture at ICAR-CIWA, was inaugurated by Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan Ji, Hon’ble Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. On the occasion, Cow-dung Slurry based Organic Bio-Fertilizers of Sundarban Cooperative Milk & Livestock Producers' Union Ltd. (Sundarini Naturals) developed under the guidance of NDDB were also launched by the Hon’ble Minister.

Shri Devesh Chaturvedi (IAS), Secretary DA&FW and DARE, MoA&FW, GoI, emphasized the importance of enabling environment for women in agriculture through education, capacity-building, and access to digital tools. These actions will not only increase women's participation but also drive broader socio-economic development within rural communities.
Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Hon’ble Director General, ICRISAT, Hyderabad, India emphasized on the challenges of Agri-food system and role of the women farmers in Indian agriculture. He also underlined the need to address gender issues in agriculture and allied sectors for adaptation to climate change at regional, national, and global scales. He suggested to highlight the success stories of successful women in all platforms for greater percolation at the ground level.
The contributions of women farmers to agriculture and allied sectors were recognized by felicitating successful women farmers Dr. R.C. Agrawal, Hon'ble Dy. Director General, (Agriculture Education), Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi in the inaugural session. In his speech, Dr. Agrawal emphasized the significance of gender equity and gender transformative approaches in technology development and dissemination to secure a sustainable agri-food system in the changing climate scenario. He congratulates the role of ICAR-CIWA in women empowerment and also appreciated the efforts made by ICAR-CIWA in organizing such programmes.
Dr. Meenesh Shah, Chairman & Managing Director, National Dairy Development Board, Anand, Gujarat, India highlighted the importance of women in Dairy sectors and about promotion of women dairy cooperatives for financial security.
Mr. Takayuki Hagiwara, Country Representative, FAO, India Country Office, New Delhi in his speech emphasized women' role in realizing the food security and gender transformative approach is crucial in achieving it. Ms. Nozomi Hashimoto, Dy. Country Director, United Nations World Food Programme, India Country Office stated that access to technology, resources and finance and engagement of women with agri-tech innovations are the need of the hour to transform the Indian agriculture.
Dr. Praveen Kumar Singh, Hon'ble Agriculture Commissioner Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, New Delhi wished that this conference will provide a platform to achieve sustainable development goals by addressing the several challenges and institutional bottlenecks. Prof. Aldas Janaiah, Vice Chancellor, Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University, Hyderabad, Telangana, India, emphasized the need for gender equity to achieve sustainable agricultural development. He pointed out that women farmers are the main conservators of biodiversity, therefore, they should be recognized and rewarded.
Dr. Neerja Prabhakar, former Vice Chancellor, Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University, Telangana, India, highlighted the importance of diverse nutrient-rich food to meet the increasing demand of burgeoning population and advocated the need of climate-smart agricultural practices to combat the adverse effects of climate change for sustainable agriculture.
Dr Anuradha Agrawal, Project Director, DKMA, ICAR, New Delhi, underlined the significance of nutrition-sensitive agricultural production for fostering nutrition and health.
Dr. Mridula Devi, Director, ICAR-CIWA, President, RAGA & Organizing Secretary of the Global Conference emphasized the importance of the conference in achieving sustainable growth in agri-food system. She also highlighted the role of ICAR-CIWA in empowering women in the agricultural sector.

The Conference provided a unique platform for the researchers, the policy makers, the academia, female and male farmers, innovators, entrepreneurs, industries, and other stakeholders to deliberate, exchange their knowledge and experiences, and derive the ways to mitigate the issues and challenges faced by women farmers and strategies to bridge the gender gap for sustainable agri-food system. With a theme centered on gender transformation, the conference emphasized how integrating gender-responsive policies and practices can drive sustainability, equity, and economic growth in agriculture and food systems. The event brought attention to the critical role of women and marginalized groups in agriculture, which has traditionally been a sector where gender disparities remain prevalent. By fostering an environment where both men and women can thrive, the conference underscored the importance of gender equality in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in relation to poverty reduction, food security, and environmental sustainability. In this 3-days event, over 500 delegates from all over the world participated in this conference in different technical sessions.
On the occasion, Conference Souvenir-cum-Abstract Book, सशक्ति राजभाषा पत्रिका, कृषिका’ काव्यांजलि – Poetry Collection (Hindi) were released by the Dignitaries. Twenty four progressive women farmers and entrepreneurs from across different parts of India were honored for their outstanding contribution in field of agriculture and allied sector. A total of 11 Memorandum of Agreement (MOAs) were signed to support women-led agricultural enterprises.A grand exhibition was also organized wherein 45 exhibitors from different parts of India showcased their women friendly agricultural technologies and products. Around 700 women farmers from across the states, as well as a significant number of students visited the Exhibition stalls.
